  6. Since the cornea has an aspheric 
  7. shape, the central readings do 
  8. not give information about the 
  9. rate of flattening of the cornea 
  10. toward the periphery.  Different 
  11. techniques have been used to 
  12. attempt to determine this 
  13. peripheral geometry using 
  14. keratometry.  
  15.  
  16. One method that has been used 
  17. is for the patient fixate to the 
  18. side and take measurements in 
  19. this position.  The patient can be asked to fixate the right and then the left plus sign on the mire on the front of the instrument rather than straight down the objective.
